Jacques Frommenthal Halevy (1799-1862), often referred to as Fromental Halevy, was the son of a Sephardic Parisian cantor whose best known work is the opera La Juive. His Jewish compositions were primarily from the Psalms, and he was a great supporter of his protege, famed Jewish composer Samuel Naumbourg. Min Hameitzar, from the Hallel Psalms, is a majestic, deeply musical show of strength and excellent for concertizing.
